Upcoming Class: Halloween Mini-Album

 Hello, Memory Bound friends!
It's almost October and Halloween will soon be upon us! Halloween is one my favorite holidays. I've scrapbooked most of our Halloween photos, but I think it would be fun to create a Halloween-themed mini-album of my daughter in her Halloween costumes over the years. There are so many memories associated with each of these costumes, and it would be fun to see them all in a single mini-album!

At age 2, she was Snow White -- and I don't mean just on Halloween! My aunt made this adorable costume which I'm pretty sure Bailey wore most of that entire year.

At age 3, she announced she wanted to be a Performing Bear. Not just a regular bear, mind you, but a PERFORMING bear. We never fully understood where that one came from, but when SNOW unexpectedly arrived on Trick-or-Treat night, we were very grateful for Performing Bear's thick fur!

I'm betting many of you have similar photos with precious memories locked inside them. Wouldn't it be fun to collect them all in one place?

Join me on October 4 or October 19 (this date includes pizza!) for my Halloween Mini-Album class and create a fun little mini-album which will hold lots of photos of most any kind of Halloween fun -- costumes, pumpkin carving, Halloween parties, and more.

As you can see, there are lots of pages which means plenty of room for your photos.

I also left spaces for you to record those memories, because I believe that the story is just as important as the photo.

On this page, I've got a space reserved for you to save a candy wrapper or two from your favorite treats. Wouldn't that be fun to look back on years from now?

I hope you'll join me at one of the two offerings of this class! You'll find details below. Hope to see you in October!

Make Your Christmas Cards with Katie & Janet!

 Hello, Memory Bound friends!

Our Christmas Card Extravaganza classes have become a Memory Bound tradition, giving you the opportunity to make a LOT of fun cards for the special people on your list. This year, I'm very excited because Katie and I are teaching the Christmas Card Extravaganza classes together! The two of us worked as a team to create 20 great cards we know you'll love. You should have seen us trying to split up the sheet of stickers -- bargaining over who was going to get the snowman and the stockings! LOL

Luckily, we worked all of that out :) and we have THREE classes scheduled this fall: October 13, November 12, and November 18 -- a Saturday, Monday, and Sunday (times listed below). If you're unable to attend a class, you can order a class kit which will come with complete instructions and color photos so you can make the cards at home or in our workroom at your convenience!

And at $35, our Christmas Card Extravaganza is a great deal! You'll make 20 beautifully detailed cards for that price, which equates to $1.75 per card -- much less than the price of a store-bought card. Your class kit will also include 4 sets of Christmas mini-stamps, so you can continue crafting at home!

Here are just 6 of the cards you'll be making:

You'll notice that the classes are 4 hours long this year, rather than 3 hours as in the past. The cards are not at all difficult to make, but as you can see in some of the photos, we will be inking and adding layers of paper and stickers which takes a bit more time. The class time always goes quickly and we guarantee that there will be plenty of laughter and fun!

We hope YOU will make plans now to join us in class. Just give us a call at (515) 965-1102 to register!

Just in: Doodlebug North Pole!

 Hello, Memory Bound friends!
While I was at the store yesterday, several boxes arrived from Doodlebug, and they were filled with some of the most adorable Christmas products ever! You will LOVE the new North Pole line. Here's a sneak peek!

Notice how Doodlebug has added a hint of icy gray to the color scheme! Love it!

We have albums, paper, stickers, 6x6 pads, jewels, adorable shaped brads (in the tubes shown below) and much, much more!

You can get all kinds of project ideas HERE on the Doodlebug blog. I especially like this holly wreath by Sherry Cartwright. She cut her holly leaves by hand, scored them with a scoring board, then adhered them to a circle cut from a paper plate. If you want to make this wreath, we've got a holly leaf die in our Accu-Cut die center which would make it even easier to create! Just purchase your paper at Memory Bound and you may use our die cut center free of charge.

Stop in soon to see the entire North Pole collection. You're going to love it!

An Inspirational Weekend, by Betsy

Hello, Memory Bound friends!
Today's post is brought to you by Betsy, one of our very talented staff members. Betsy and a group of Memory Bound gals took a road trip to Scrapfest in Minneapolis last weekend to take some classes and bring back some great ideas to share with our customers. Betsy was kind enough to take photos of along the way and prepare this narrative of her very fun and inspirational weekend! I'm sure you'll enjoy "riding along" on Betsy's road trip! Thanks so much, Betsy! :)

Scrapfest 2012
Betsy Knoblock Grabinski, Memory Bound Staff Member and Paper Crafter

I’ve been paper crafting for as long as I can remember. I recently found a couple of trip books I made about family vacations from my childhood and can officially say I was 10 years old when I caught the bug. After three years working at Memory Bound and seeing all the amazing events there are for crafters like me, I was super-excited to have the opportunity to go to Scrapfest 2012 at the Mall of America in Minneapolis this past weekend.

We had a group from Memory Bound go to classes on Sunday, but I decided to make a weekend out of it and registered for events on Saturday as well. I had no idea what I was in for, but with classes taught by Teresa Collins, Tim Holtz and many other crafting rock stars, how could I go wrong?

I registered for 6 classes on Saturday. In the morning, my classes included an album from Simple Stories using their Summer Fresh line, a Christmas mini-book with paper by Echo Park and was taught by web guru Jessica Sprague, and a card/layout class with Jillibean Soup’s Macho Nacho line. Classes are 45 minutes long and most of the projects really need 2-3 hours to complete, so things go super-fast and I realized quickly that most of the projects wouldn’t be finished when the class ended.

Simple Stories Summer Fresh Album class mass of supplies – I hit the ground running with this fast-paced class.

Oh yeah, and the one-and-only Tim Holtz was there!

My cousin Sarah joined me Saturday afternoon, which included two classes taught by Teresa Collins and one by the designers at Graphic 45/Canvas Corp. One of the really cool things about this event is getting to interact with the product designers. Teresa Collins talked about how she got started scrapbooking (her mother’s unexpected passing) and what inspires her paper designs (her background in interior design influences a lot of what she creates).

Jessica Sprague, who also has some fabulous online classes, instructed a class for a Christmas mini album with paper she designed herself – Echo Park’s Verry Merry line.

I actually got a couple of things completed in this class! Jill Yegerlehner, the “Big Bean” of Jillibean Soup taught this class of two cards and layout of her Macho Nacho line.

Teresa Collins teaching a mini album class using her Vintage Finds line.

Doesn’t her paper look a lot like a vintage wallpaper book?

Me and the glamorous Teresa Collins.

This was one of the large classes taught in the rotunda in the middle of the mall with shoppers watching from above and the constant smell of Cinnabon in the air.

The class, taught by Graphic 45 and Canvas Corp, was a printer’s tray using their Trousseau paper line and materials like burlap and washi tape were used for details.

This is my cousin Sarah and I with our “finished” projects – just need to add the photos of our grandparents and we plan on giving them to our moms for Christmas.

On Sunday, I took three classes. The first was presented by one of favorite companies October Afternoon, whose home office is in Apple Valley, MN just 20 minutes from the mall.

We used October Afternoon’s Woodland Park line to create this mini-book called “The Story of my Life.”

My next class was by We R Memory Keepers with an emphasis on several new tools including the Lucky 8 Punch and the Sew Stamper. The instructor was the actual designer of the Lucky 8 Punch series, which she talked about having the idea for in the middle of the night. She even holds several patents through her innovative work with the company.

Demonstration of the Lucky 8 Punch from We R Memory Keepers:

My last class was a card class with the ladies of Jillibean Soup – Jill Yegerlehner, Jenifer Harkin (who lives in Des Moines!), me and Kimber McGray.

After jam-packed days of paper-crafting madness, I took a little break before heading home Рa yummy brownie and soda at the cozy (and quiet) Nordstrom Caf̩.

I hope you enjoyed your ride with me to Scrapfest 2012. If I go next year, I will:

1)  Bring my rollie cart. My bag got heavy before noon on Saturday.
2)  Pack a snack and a bottle of water. With that many classes, there wasn’t much time to eat.
3) Come up a day early and do make & takes. The lines were long and I couldn’t fit them in the schedule.
 4) Be ready to be inspired!! I knew I would learn some stuff, but I had no idea how inspiring the people who create the products we use are. And they love to share their ideas, their challenges and their inspirations with us.

Scenes from September Girls' Night Out

Hello, Memory Bound friends!

If you'd like to jump start your creativity and meet new crafting friends at the same time, you should consider coming to a Girls' Night Out meeting! The group meets once a month for fun and inspiration. We simply bring whatever projects we've been working on during the month to share. It's always interesting and educational to see what everyone has been up to! We also plan special events, including crops, from time to time. Later this month the group is going on a road trip!

If you'd like to see more of what this group has been up to, check out the beautiful Mixed Media projects which are on display at Memory Bound during the month of September. You can read more about them HERE!

At our September meeting, we had a lot of ground to cover...as usual! Fonda always amazes us with her creative endeavors. Here she is giving the group a sneak peek of the project she is making for the recipe circle journal project we're starting next month. She used antique silverware to create a closure!
Fonda's son is always a delight and often brings projects he's made at home. On this occasion, he showed us a little book about the planets which is sure to inspire a new creative endeavor!

We welcomed back sisters Alisa and Jessica after a busy summer! Alisa brought several great layouts she's created for her family albums.

Jessica had made several layouts and also a fun photo tray project using pictures of her son. He's fascinated with rocks and sticks, so she incorporated some into the design!

Diana brought many new cards she's created for our Staff Studio using one of her newest Cricut cartridges. Diana's little creatures have "Wobbles" under them which enable them to move. If you need a wonderful handmade card, be sure to check out our Staff Studio where you can purchase one for only $4! Read all about it HERE.
RaNae is always very productive! She brought several projects to share. In the last month, she's made close to 200 cards for Operation Write Home -- amazing work for a great cause. You can read all about Operation Write Home HERE!

RaNae has been busy making lots of layouts for her family scrapbooks, too. This one is about a trip to the Story City Carousel, a central Iowa landmark.

Karen brought some fun projects to share, including a mini-album about her recent trip to Key West...

...and another passport style mini-album which highlights all the great trips she's taken.

Jennifer, one of our newest members, brought several fun projects, cards, and layouts.

She also gave us a sneak peek of her recipe album. We loved the little banner she made with oven mitts!

In addition to these projects, our leader Diane brought the latest mini-album she made for her grandson Gavin. She's making several albums for each grandchild in a variety of themes. Little Gavin is not yet one year old but he's already got a school album ready to go! :)

We invite you to come spend an evening seeing what Girls' Night Out is all about. Our next meeting is Monday, October 8, 6-7:30. If you'd like to join us, give us a call! It's free, always fun, and very inspiring!

Get Inspired by Mixed Media Circle Journals!

 Hello, Memory Bound friends!

You've probably heard that September is Mixed Media Month at Memory Bound. Mixed media is simply artwork that has been created with more than one medium or material. Mixed media is one of the biggest trends in paper crafting right now. (You can read all about the latest trends HERE and HERE.) As such, paper crafters are incorporating mixed media into their work like never before!

You'll find all kinds of mixed media samples at Memory Bound this month. These projects will inspire you to think outside the box! Be sure to stop in and see the Mixed Media Circle Journals created by our Girls' Night Out group. These projects were created over a period of several months by passing them from one group member to the next, each one adding to the project in her own unique and creative way. (You can read all about this fun project HERE!) You'll see art journals, a travel album, a desk calendar, a book of cards and much more! Each beautiful project demonstrates how much fun you can have with mixed media!

Here's one page inside of Fonda's travel album. The cover is an Iowa license plate!

Here's a peek of RaNae's Essence of You journal. Would you believe each of these beautiful folders started out as a plain envelope?

Here's the cover of Diana's journal. Each member created a unique layout about herself!

Here's a page from Jill's lovely desk calendar.

Be sure to stop in and take a close look at these amazing projects. Then let yourself be inspired to dabble in mixed media this month!
